Another Year Older, and Wiser Too

Our baby boy turned 4 years old yesterday. He was reluctant to take on the responsibilities of a 4 year old. He told me, “I just don’t want to be bigger. I want to be little.” (Being “bigger” is a drag sometimes.)

He decided that he would go ahead and turn 4 if it meant he could have a cake and presents. Grandma and Grandpa Black sent a package that was delivered to our door on Monday. When I asked him if he was ready to have a birthday he said, “Yes! My birthday party is in my box.”

Kadie made Luke a birthday crown to wear.

Luke wanted me to make him a snake birthday cake.

(I obviously will not be winning any cake decorating contests in this lifetime, but he thought it was great.)

I made the cake in the morning and it was all that he could do to wait until everyone else returned home from school and work until we could eat the cake and open presents. He would ask me every 10 minutes, “Is my cake ready?” I told him he had to wait until everyone got home before we could celebrate. We called Daddy to confirm this crazy claim I was making was true. Then instead of asking me if we could eat the cake every 10 minutes, he kept insisting that we go pick up everybody so they would be home.

The hours ticked by. We played Connect Four and Guesstures together.

We got the first snow of the season.

We finally picked up the kids and Luke fell asleep, so I got some respite from his impatience.

He was excited with all his presents, especially his Lightening McQueen car and the animal blanket Grandma Black made for him. He curled up on the blanket with his new car to watch Cars with his brother and sisters.

About Luke:

*He loves being the “baby brother”

*He is extremely stubborn

*He loves Lightening McQueen (and only Lightening McQueen. All those other cars are silly.)

*He loves music. He makes me turn on the radio in the car and he’ll say, “Not that one. That one is too stupid.” When we hit on a song he approves of he’ll say, “That’s good. That’s my song.”

*Some of his favorite songs are “Tonight, Tonight” by Hot Chelle Rae, “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People, anything by Adele, “The Cave” by Mumford and Sons, and “Life is a Highway” by Rascal Flatts. (and many, many others).

*Sometime he bursts into spontaneous song in public places.

*When he gets excited he shakes and “shouts” with joy.

*He likes to “ride” his new bike with the training wheels. This process consists of an adult pushing and steering the bike while he pedals intermittently and looks at the scenery. If you encourage him to take a more active part in the process he says, “It’s too hard for me. You do it.”

*He loves oatmeal and cold smoothies.

*When he gets upset about something, he will mutter about it under his breath for long lengths of time.

*He gets excited when he gets to flush the toilet.

*He loves Primary, except on the Sundays when he tells me he can’t go because “it’s too dangerous.”

*He is very loving and affectionate.

*We love him very much!
