The Funeral: Part 1 (The Drive)

Grandma Kiholm passed away on the 1st of February. We were sad to hear of her passing, but knew she had been having a rough time physically. We had initially decided as a family that Ken would fly to the funeral by himself, but felt that it was important that we all be there, so we changed our minds and prepared for the long drive.

Ken was on his way to Atlanta for work when he got the news about Grams. He called me and we decided that we would leave for Idaho on Saturday morning since his flight was due to arrive in Omaha at 10:30 on Friday night. Those plans changed when a nice snowstorm hit Denver, where Ken was supposed to catch a connecting flight to Omaha. He instead got on a direct flight that was due to arrive in Omaha at 4:30pm on Friday. Since the forecast was predicting a sizable snow storm to hit early Saturday morning in Lincoln, we decided to leave as soon as Ken made it home from the airport. Frantic packing by Mom and children ensued.

We made it out of Lincoln at about 7pm Friday night. We hoped to come out ahead of the storm, but we were forced to spend the night in Kearny, NE after the road conditions became too dangerous to continue. Kearny is only 139 miles west of Lincoln, but what can you do? We were glad we stopped after we awoke to a half a foot of snow and proceeded along the interstate where we saw many jackknifed semi trucks. Since we were in a hurry to be on our way and didn’t want to dig our luggage out of our snow-covered van, I made the kids wear the same clothes from the day before. The roads were slick until we reached North Platte, and then our trip was clear all the way to Idaho.

Since we only made it to Kearny on Friday and had a long road ahead of us, we decided to stop and visit Morgan and Chelsi in Logan. Logan is a bit off our path, but it was well worth the detour. The kids slept on the floor in Chelsi’s apartment while Ken and I got a hotel room all to ourselves!

It was fun to laugh and visit with Chelsi and Morgan. And I’m sure Chelsi’s downstairs neighbors will forgive her for inviting the herd of rhino to spend the night. (At least nobody was moving furniture…Oh wait, we did that too. Oops).

We left early Sunday morning to complete our trip to Boise. Hopefully we left early enough for Morgan to prepare his half of the Sunday School lesson, but if not, it’s his own fault for procrastinating ;)
